Disaster, Terrorism and Psychological First Aid:

Understanding the Mental Health Treatment of Acute Trauma

This session will explore cognitive, behavioral and affective impact of trauma and will identify strategies to assist clients during acute phases of the trauma experience. Psychological First Aid will be presented and use of cognitive-behavioral interventions explored.

 

Topics:

 

Robyn D. Walser, Ph.D. is Director of TL Consultation Services and works at the National Center for PTSD, in California, USA. As a licensed psychologist, she maintains an international training, consulting and therapy practice. Dr. Walser has expertise in traumatic stress and substance abuse and has authored a number of articles, chapters and books on these topics. She has recently published a review article discussing the use of CBT in treating the immediate effects of trauma. Dr. Walser is invested in developing innovative ways to translate science-into-practice and continues to do research and education on the treatment of post traumatic reactions. She has had a number of leadership roles in international and national organizations and she served as Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee for Disaster and Terrorism for the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy.
